Food Security & Livelihoods

Degaan Relief and Development Organization (DRDO) has more than 15 years of experience   implementing large-scale Food Security and Livelihoods (FSL), emergency response, and resilience programmes across Puntland, with particularly extensive operations in Mudug Region.

Over the past two decades, DRDO has partnered with WFP and other humanitarian and development actors to deliver food assistance, cash and voucher transfers, Food-for-Work/Food-for-Assets, and livelihood interventions for drought-affected, food-insecure and vulnerable communities.

Some of the Key Experience and Results

Food for Work / Food for Assets (2012–2015)

Reached approximately 38,400 beneficiaries through community-based asset creation and food assistance. Activities included sanitation, Prospis clearance, water catchments, road rehabilitation, shallow wells, berkads, vegetable/fruit and crop gardens, soil bunds, fodder production and canal rehabilitation.

Food, Voucher and Cash-Based Assistance (2016)

Supported approximately 5,000 beneficiaries through in-kind food assistance, vouchers and Cash-Based Transfers (CBT) linked to community asset creation, including water catchments, roads, shallow wells, berkads, gardens, soil bunds, fodder production and canal rehabilitation.

Emergency Drought Response (2017)

During severe drought conditions in Puntland, DRDO delivered cash, vouchers and in-kind food assistance, reaching more than 45,000 vulnerable people.

Emergency Relief and Drought Livelihoods (2017)

Provided additional emergency food assistance to approximately 7,550 drought-affected people, helping vulnerable households address immediate food gaps and protect their livelihoods.

Relief and Livelihoods Programme (2019)

Supported more than 30,000 drought-affected individuals in Galkayo District through integrated emergency relief and livelihood assistance.

Community Asset Creation and Food Security (2019)

Reached more than 12,000 individuals in Galkayo District through livelihood and community asset-creation interventions, combining community infrastructure development with assistance to address household food gaps.

Livelihoods and Resilience Programme (2020)

Implemented livelihood and productive asset-creation activities in Jariiban, Galkayo and Galdogob Districts, reaching approximately 6,500 individuals with assistance aimed at reducing food gaps and strengthening household resilience.

Overall reach

The documented interventions above alone represent more than 140,000 beneficiary instances across multiple programmes and years, demonstrating DRDO's capacity to manage large-scale humanitarian and livelihood operations.
